Junta’s land allocation for all religions is twisted into anti-Muslim propaganda

In Nay Pyi Taw, land was recently allocated by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing for religious buildings of all major faiths. Two acres each were granted for Buddhist monasteries, Christian churches, Hindu temples, and Muslim mosques. This was not the result of lobbying by Muslim leaders but rather a unilateral decision of the Junta chief, who reasoned that Myanmar’s new capital should reflect the country’s multi-religious reality—a step never taken under Ne Win, Thein Sein, or Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Yet Ma Ba Tha monks and ultra-nationalists have seized on the Muslim plots alone, raising alarm and stirring resentment. They ignore the fact that identical allocations were made for other religions. Their motive is transparent: to exploit Islamophobia, create division, and claim false political credit during a time of growing crisis for the military regime.

Muslims did not ask for new mosques in Nay Pyi Taw

Contrary to propaganda, Myanmar Muslims never demanded new mosques in Nay Pyi Taw. When the land was granted, major floods and then a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar. Muslim communities focused their efforts on donating to victims and rebuilding lives, not on construction projects. To this day, no mosques have been built on the allocated sites; Shia Muslims have only managed to fence off their plot.

What the majority of Muslims in Myanmar truly want is much simpler:

• Reopening of long-sealed mosques in Taungoo,
• Reopening of closed mosques in Meikhtila,
• Reconstruction of 136 mosques destroyed by the earthquake in Sagaing and Mandalay Regions.

These are the genuine priorities of the Muslim community—not symbolic plots in Nay Pyi Taw.

Unequal rules for religions

As U Aung Tin pointed out in his commentary:

“In Myanmar, religious buildings of non-Buddhist faiths are not allowed to receive international assistance. But when donations come from abroad for Buddhist monasteries or pagodas, permission is freely granted. By contrast, in Muslim countries, their governments willingly donate to build churches, Hindu temples, and even Buddhist pagodas.”

This double standard reveals the structural bias that has long denied Myanmar’s Muslims fair treatment.

Islamophobia as a political weapon

Today, Ma Ba Tha and racist voices are again making noise everywhere, weaponizing Islamophobia instead of contributing to peace and unity. Their narrative distorts the facts and seeks to distract the public from the failures of the military regime.

In reality, the Nay Pyi Taw mosque issue was never a Muslim demand—it was a Junta initiative. Yet extremist groups have chosen to manufacture outrage, further poisoning Myanmar’s fragile social fabric.

Editorial Note (MMNN): Myanmar faces enough crises—conflict, natural disasters, economic collapse. It is time to reject the politics of hate and focus on rebuilding trust, justice, and coexistence among all communities.

ရှီယာများသည် သူတို့နေရာတွင် ခြံစည်းရိုးစတင် နေခြင်းသာဖြစ်ပါသည်။

မွတ်စလင်နိုင်ငံတွေမှာ မွတ်စလင်အစိုးရတွေက ချာချ်တွေ၊ ဟိန္ဒူဘုရားကျောင်းတွေ၊ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာဘုရားကျောင်းကန်တွေကို ဆောက်လုပ်လှူဒါန်းပေးနေကြတယ်။
