Maubin, Irrawaddy Division — A tense confrontation erupted in Yae Lae Lay village, Maubin Township, when extremist monks aligned with Ma Ba Tha attempted to intimidate local Muslims who had legally reopened an old mosque for cleaning and restoration.

The mosque, long forced shut under pressure from Buddhist nationalist groups, recently received official permission from local authorities to resume cleaning and maintenance. However, as villagers began their work, a group of monks — including outsiders reportedly brought in from Nay Pyi Taw — arrived and issued threats. Witnesses described their behavior as more akin to thugs than religious figures.

“These so-called monks are terrified of even one mosque reopening,” said one local Muslim resident. “They claim to defend morality, yet they ignore illegal KTV clubs and brothels, while harassing us for peacefully restoring a place of worship.”

The intimidation has fueled anger in the village, where residents see it as another attempt by Ma Ba Tha to weaponize religion for political purposes. With elections approaching under military rule, the resurgence of such groups is widely viewed as part of a coordinated campaign to inflame anti-Muslim sentiment and shore up support for the junta’s political wing, the USDP.

Community members stress that they followed due process and obtained legal permission for the mosque’s cleaning. The monks’ threats are therefore seen not only as religious discrimination but as open defiance of the law.

Local observers warn that the episode reflects a broader pattern: nationalist monks reemerging to divide communities and reinforce military dominance. “These men wear robes but act like mob leaders,” said another villager. “They are not serving Buddhism, but the generals’ agenda.”

Despite intimidation, residents of Yae Lae Lay say they will continue efforts to maintain their mosque, calling for solidarity from democratic forces and interfaith allies. “For us, a mosque is not a weapon,” said a youth organizer. “It is a place of peace. We will not be silenced by fear.”
