U.S. Congress Takes Major Step to Support Myanmar’s Struggle for Freedom and Justice
BREAKING: On July 22, 2025, three important bills on Myanmar advanced in the U.S. Congress — all passing committee review on the same day. They now move forward for further debate in the full House and then the Senate.
What Are the Bills?
1. BRAVE Burma Act (H.R.3190 – Amended Version)
o Expands sanctions against junta-linked state enterprises, Myanma Economic Bank, and foreign jet fuel suppliers.
o Blocks increase in Myanmar’s IMF voting power while the military rules.
o Increases U.S. pressure on junta allies and economic enablers.
2. Burma GAP Act (H.R.4140)
o Provides humanitarian aid and protection for Rohingya refugees and IDPs.
o Invests in justice and accountability for genocide and atrocity crimes.
o Supports a federal democratic transition led by all ethnic communities, including Rohingya.
3. No New Burma Funds Act (H.R.4423)
o Prohibits new World Bank disbursements or financing to the junta-controlled regime.
o Keeps the financial tap turned off to the junta at international financial institutions.
Why This Matters
• These bills combine military, humanitarian, and financial pressure on the military regime.
• The U.S. is clearly siding with the people of Myanmar, backing justice, ethnic inclusion, and democratic transition.

Great news! This afternoon, my bipartisan Brave Burma Act passed the Financial Services Committee by a vote of 54-0! This legislation moves to cut off the primary source of funding for the Military Junta in Burma and diminish the regime’s ability to conduct airstrikes on civilian populations.
