Centuries-Old Muslim Cemetery in Yamethin Demolished

In the western ward of Yamethin Township, a historic Muslim cemetery—over 500 years old—has been demolished. This cemetery was established during the era of ancient Burmese kings, on land granted as a royal endowment to Muslim followers of Islam. It has long served as the resting place of royal officials, loyal palace servants, and revered spiritual figures known for their piety and virtue.

On January 31, 2014, to prevent the cemetery’s destruction, both Buddhist and Muslim residents of the town convened a dialogue. Attending this meeting were prominent figures such as the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, U Khin Aung Myint, the Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs, the District Administrator, and other relevant officials.

During this meeting, consensus was reached: no further burials would take place, but the cemetery would be preserved as a memorial garden, and religious rites would still be allowed. The District Administrator signed off on the agreement, and it was disseminated through official channels.

However, after a change in government, on June 25, 2016, the township municipal council summoned the Muslim Cemetery Maintenance Committee and announced plans to demolish the cemetery on July 9, citing the construction of government housing as the reason.

On July 4, about 20 people, accompanied by township municipal officials, came to the site, broke the cemetery gate lock, and attempted to remove relics and remains of the deceased. Regional authorities failed to intervene effectively.

Appeals were made to then-President U Htin Kyaw and to State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, urging them to uphold the original agreement and preserve the cemetery. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful.

According to a local resident, government officials returned at 1 PM on the scheduled date and proceeded with exhumation activities. The physical demolition of the cemetery was reportedly carried out the following day.

ဒီသင်္ချိုင်းကို မဖျက်ဖို့ ၂၀၁၄ ခုနှစ် ဇန်နဝါရီလ (၃၁) ရက်နေ့မှာ မြို့ခံ ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာဝင်တွေ၊ အစ္စလာမ်ဘာသာဝင်တွေ ညှိနှိုင်းဆွေးနွေးပွဲ လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။ အဲဒီ အစည်းအဝေးကို အမျိုးသားလွှတ်တော်ဥက္ကဌ ဦးခင်အောင်မြင့်၊ သာသနာရေးဦးစီးဌာန ညွန်ချုပ်၊ ခရိုင်အုပ်ချုပ်ရေးနဲ့ အခြားဌာနဆိုင်ရာတွေ အားလုံးတက်ခဲ့တယ်။
အဲဒီသင်္ချိုင်းမှာ ဆက်မမြှပ်တော့ဘဲ၊ ပန်းခြံအဖြစ်ထားရှိဖို့၊ ဝတ်ပြုဆောင်မှာ ဆက်လက်ဝတ်ပြုဖို့ သဘောတူခဲ့ကြတယ်။

အခု အစိုးရပြောင်းသွားပြီး ၂၀၁၆ ခုနှစ် ဇွန်လ (၂၅) ရက်နေ့မှာ မြို့နယ်စည်ပင်က မွတ်စလင်သင်္ချိုင်းထိန်းသိမ်းစောင့်ရှောက်ရေး ကော်မီတီကို ဆင့်ခေါ်ပြီး အစိုးရ အိမ်ရာဆောက်မှာ ဖြစ်တဲ့အတွက် ဇူလိုင်လ (၉) ရက်နေ့မှာ ဖျက်သိမ်းမယ်လို့ အသိပေးခဲ့တယ်။
ဇူလိုင်လ (၄) ရက်နေ့မှာ မြို့နယ်စည်ပင်နဲ့ လူ (၂၀) လောက် ရောက်လာပြီး သင်္ချိုင်းရဲ့ တံခါးသော့ဖျက်ပြီး သံဃာတွေနဲ့ ဝိညာဉ်ပြောင်းရွှေ့ဖို့ ကြိုးစားခဲ့တယ်။ တိုင်းဒေသကြီးအစိုးရက တားလိုက်လို့ မရခဲ့ဘူး။
သင်္ချိုင်းကို မဖျက်သိမ်းဘဲ မူလသဘောတူညီထားတဲ့ အတိုင်း ထားရှိပေးဖို့ သမ္မတ ဦးထင်ကျော်ဆီကို လိပ်မူပြီး နိုင်ငံတော် အတိုင်ပင်ခံ ဒေါ်အောင်ဆန်းစုကြည် ဆီကိုလည်း စာပို့ခဲ့တယ်။ မအောင်မြင်ပါဘူး။
ဒီနေ့တော့ သူတို့သတ်မှတ်ထားတဲ့ အတိုင်း နေ့လည် (၁) နာရီမှာ ရောက်လာပြီး ဝိညာဉ်ပြောင်းရွှေ့တာတွေ လုပ်သွားတယ်လို့ မြို့ခံ တစ်ယောက်က ပြောပါတယ်။
ဖျက်တာကတော့ နောက်ရက်မှာ ဖျက်သွားမယ်လို့ သိရတယ်။
