When we heard of the passing of Jet Kwam Chan Kone — the beloved satirist, academic, and author also known as Maung Tha Cho, it stirred a wave of memories across generations who laughed, cried, and thought deeply because of his writing.
Though not everyone agreed with his views — especially those aired in public lectures or during film discussions like the one about General Aung San’s biopic — his satirical wit, especially under the “clown mask” of Jet Kwam Chan Kone, touched something timeless in the Burmese soul. His pen danced between irony and empathy, jest and judgment.
When he died on the morning of 10 July 2025, at the age of 68 in Pinlon Hospital, it felt as though a lamp of sharp humor and fearless honesty had gone out.
One of his admirers, Kaung Kin Ko, recalled a piece written in his spirit:
It was about a surreal football match — a match not found in reality, but born from the absurdity of our times.
One team? A superclub like PSG, recently victorious 4–0 over the royal Real Madrid. They had stars like Messi, CR7, R9, De Bruyne. But there was a twist — they were all blindfolded. Why? Because the team itself was blind.
Their opponent? Not an equally strong team — but a squad made up of broken, mentally shattered souls.
And though the blindfolded team couldn’t see, they still won. How?
Because the traumatized team kept scoring own goals.
A poetic tragedy. A satire made real.
And it reminded the author of a poem he wrote back in March 2009 — fitting not just for that moment, but chillingly apt for the Myanmar of today:

A Life of Letters and Laughter
Born on March 11, 1958, in Thone Khwe village, Kan Gyan Kone Township, Yangon Division, U Nyunt Thaung was the eldest of three sons. His father was U Win Thein.
He received his early education in local schools: Thone Khwe Primary School, Kyangyan Kone High School, North Okkalapa BLK (1), and later at North Okkalapa SHS (1), where he passed his matriculation exam in 1977 with distinction in physics.
Originally a science student, he studied at Regional College No. 2 with a focus on Mathematics and Geology. He later pursued Physics at Yangon University. However, his passion eventually led him to pivot into Myanmar literature and language.
He earned his B.A. in 1981, Honours in 1983, and Master’s Degree in 1988 — all in Myanmar Literature from Yangon University.
His literary journey began with the poem “Modern Love” published in Thaungpyaw Magazine (December 1973). He rose through the ranks, becoming Editor-in-Chief of Eain Mat Phu Magazine in July 1988. His sharp pen soon adopted the humorous voice of Jet Kwam Chan Kone, one of his many satirical personas.
Over the years, he taught at several institutions: Workers’ College, Regional College, Institute of Foreign Languages, Yangon University, Meiktila Degree College, Hinthada College — and finally served as a senior lecturer at Yangon University of Education, Department of Myanmar, from 2010 onwards.
In the wake of the military coup on 1 February 2021, Maung Tha Cho was arrested and imprisoned, not for recent activism, but for an article he had written eight years earlier. Charged under Section 505(a), he was sentenced on 22 February 2022 to two years’ imprisonment by Insein Prison Court. He was released only in November 2022.
He never stopped writing. He never stopped thinking.
Farewell to the Clown Who Told the Truth
In a country where fear often silences speech, satire is an act of bravery. Jet Kwam Chan Kone made us laugh — but never lightly. His satire was a scalpel, not a feather. And his legacy will echo as long as Myanmar needs voices that speak truth, even when hidden behind clown masks.
Rest in peace, Professor Maung Tha Cho. You made the nation see — even when it was blindfolded.

ပါမောက္ခဒေါက်တာဦးညွှန့်သောင်း (စာရေးဆရာဂျက်(ကွမ်းခြံကုန်း)/မောင်သာချို) ကိုရန်ကုန်တိုင်း ကွမ်းခြံကုန်းမြို့ သုံးခွကျေးရွာတွင် အဖ ဦးဝင်းသိန်း အမိ တို့က ၁၉၅၈ ခု၊ မတ်လ ၁၁ ရက်မွေးဖွားသည်။ သားသုံးယောက် အနက် ဆရာသည်အကြီးဆုံးသား ဖြစ်ပြီးအမည်ရင်းဦးညွန့်သောင်း ဖြစ်သည်။

၁၉၇၃ ခု ဒီဇင်ဘာလထုတ်သောင်းပြောင်းထွေလာ ရယ်စရာ မဂ္ဂဇင်းမှ ‘ခေတ်သစ် မေတ္တာ’ ကဗျာဖြင့် စာပေလောကသို့ မောင်သာချိုစတင် ဝင်ရောက်ခဲ့သည်။ ၁၉၈၈ ခု ဇူလိုင်လထုတ် အိပ်မက်ဖူး မဂ္ဂဇင်းမှာတာဝန်ခံ အယ်ဒီတာ အဖြစ် ဆောင်ရွက်ခဲ့ဖူးသည်။ဆရာ့ကလောင်ခွဲ တခုမှာ “ဂျက်ကွမ်းခြံကုန်း” ဖြစ်သည်။
မောင်သာချိုသည်လုပ်သားများ ကောလိပ်၊ ဒေသကောလိပ်၊ နိုင်ငံခြား ဘာသာသိပ္ပံ၊ ရန်ကုန် တက္ကသိုလ်၊ မိတ္ထီလာ ဒီဂရီ ကောလိပ်၊ ဟင်္သာတ ကောလိပ် တွင် ဆရာအဖြစ်အမှုထမ်း ခဲ့ဖူးပြီး ၂၀၁၀ တွင် ပညာရေးတက္ကသိုလ် ရန်ကုန်သို့ ပြောင်းရွေ့ပြီး မြန်မာစာဌာန တွင် ကထိက အဖြစ် တာဝန် ထမ်းဆောင် ခဲ့ပါသည်။
၂၀၂၁ခုနှစ် ဖေဖော်ဝါရီလ ၁ရက်နေ့တွင် တပ်မတော်ကအာဏာသိမ်းယူမှု ဖြစ်ပွားပြီးနောက် ဆရာမောင်သာချို ဖမ်းဆီးထိန်းသိမ်းခြင်းခံခဲ့ရသည်။ဆရာမောင်သာချိုကို လွန်ခဲ့သည့် ၈နှစ်ခန့်က ဂျာနယ်တစ်စောင်တွင် ရေးသားခဲ့သော ဆောင်းပါးတစ်ခုကြောင့် ဆိုပြီး ပုဒ်မ ၅၀၅(က) ဖြင့် အမှုဖွင့်တရားစွဲခဲ့ခြင်းဖြစ်သည်။
ထိုအမှုနှင့် ၂၀၂၂ခုနှစ် ဖေဖော်ဝါရီ ၂၂ရက်နေ့တွင်အင်းစိန်ထောင်တွင်းတရားရုံးက မောင်သာချိုအား ထောင်ဒဏ် ၂ နှစ်ချမှတ်သည်။ဖမ်းဆီးထိန်းသိမ်းခံရပြီး ၁ နှစ် ကျော်အကြာ မှ ယင်းအမိန့်ကို ချမှတ်ခဲ့ခြင်းလည်းဖြစ်သည်။ ဆရာမောင်သာချိုသည် ၂၀၂၂ခုနှစ် နိုဝင်ဘာ ၁၇ရက်တွင် လွတ်ငြိမ်းဖြင့်ပြန်လွတ်လာခဲ့သည်။
စာရေးဆရာပါမောက္ခဒေါက်တာဦးညွှန့်သောင်း (၆၈ နှစ်) သည် ၂၀၂၅ ဇူလိူင် ၁၀ ရက်နေ့မနက်တွင်ပင်လုံဆေးရုံ၌ကွယ်လွန်သည်။
