MYANMAR MINORITIES HAVE A DREAM not unlike the American Dream
I hereby revised my article first published in Burma Digest and my blog, “Opening Heart on Equal Rights for All Ethnicities” which is actually Burmanized the famous, “I Have A Dream” speech given by Martin Luther King in the August 1963.
On the 12th February 1947, all of the Ethnic groups of Burma (now called Myanmar) had a dream to form the Union of Burma with the signing of the Panglon Agreement.
But their dreams changed to a dreadful nightmare under the successive Military rulers up to the present Myanmar Government.His Royal Highness Prince Hso Khan Pha, also known as Tiger Yawnghwe, the eldest son of Sao Shwe Thaik, the former Saopha [Prince] of Yawnghwe [Nyaung-Shwe] and the first President of Burma after Burma’s Independence from British colonial rule said_
“Might I add that the problem that exists is not ethic ‘minority’ rights versus the ‘majority’ Burmese rights but rather of equality of rights for all?
The 1948 Union of Burma was understood by us to be a federal union of equals. And though the intent of the 1948 Constitution was federal, in rushing it through the Constituent Assembly by the AFPFL [Fa-sa-pa-la], the federal Union in practice became unitary.
When we, during 1958-62, tried to institute constitutional reforms in the Union Parliament towards a more equitable federal system as envisaged by the 1947 Panglong Agreement, Ne Win staged his military coup and he and his successor Burmese military troops in Shan country raped, murdered & tortured to oppress, suppress and intimidate.”

American Dreams Vs Malaysian Dreams and Myanmar Dreams of Muslims of Myanmar
This morning I was listening to BBC news on Astro TV while shaving.
I heard Former Defence Secretary (Defence Minister) and Director of CIA (the Central Intelligence Agency) Mr.Leon Panetta talking at the DNC (Democratic National Convention) supporting the nominating of Mrs. Clinton as the President.
I was deeply moved by his words asking the delegates and Americans to continue giving chance for “American Dreams”.
He mentioned that he is the son of Italian Migrant who opened a Restaurant in California. He revealed that he remembered that he had to stand on a chair and wash the dishes. He said that his parents even never dreamed that their migrant child would someday become a Defence Secretary of US.
Leon Panetta was born in Monterey, California, the son of Carmelina Maria and Carmelo Frank Panetta, Italian immigrants from Siderno in Calabria who owned 7 restaurants in the Monterey area.
My Malaysian dream is, Alhamdulillah, so far so good and In Sya Allah, my children will carry on to realise their dreams. By the way the seed of my Malaysian dream was implanted by Dr. Maung Maung (Hnin Myitta Clinic) and his sister Daw Khin Ma Ma Hnin.
But most of the Malaysia Dreams of numerous Myanmars and even the Myanmar Muslims including Rohingyas are aborted by Nightmares and some even had to lost their lives in the Indian Ocean, Thai hills and Malaysia Prisons.
We are sad that although we share the same faith we are not welcomed in Malaysia as we are generally not regarded as fellow Muslim brothers like other Arab Muslims, Indonesian Muslims, Thai Muslims, Cambodian Muslims and Philippine Muslims here. But with Allah’s special mercy my family and I got the numerous Malay friends and leaders who regarded our family as their own.
And it is sad that the Myanmar Dream of Muslims of Myanmar including Rohingyas are still just a faint hope or mere imagination only. Like Myanmar phrase, “Shwe Pyi Daw _ Mhyaw Tine Wae” just a mirage for us as our hope from the so called democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s new NLD government is nothing yet for us yet. Even some of our cousin Ethnic Minorities are acting like their BIG BROTHER Bama Buddhists to discriminate on us.
Tribute: Maung Maung (Shwe Keraweik)
This narrative would be incomplete without remembering my late No. 5 brother, Maung Maung (known widely as Shwe Keraweik). A fearless human rights activist, he worked alongside monks like U Wirathu in Mandalay to prevent religious riots incited by the military junta. He cooperated with major international outlets and NGOs such as Al Jazeera, BBC, Human Rights Watch, Genocide Watch, Fortify Rights, and Physicians for Human Rights.
He was granted UNHCR refugee status upon arriving in Kuala Lumpur but waited 14 years for resettlement. Sadly, he passed away in 2022 before reuniting with his family in the U.S.
His writings—visionary, poetic, and full of yearning—captured the dreams of Myanmar’s persecuted minorities. He spoke of the “American Dream,” the “Malaysian Dream,” and above all, the dream of belonging, justice, and dignity.
His writings live on, especially his moving pieces titled “Myanmar Minorities’ Dream” (မြန်မာ လူနည်းစုတွေရဲ့ အိပ်မက်), which speak to the struggle and dreams of those denied a homeland, citizenship, or security.
His most powerful essay, “The American Dream, the Malaysian Dream, and the Burmese Dream” (translated from Burmese), contrasts the guaranteed freedoms in the U.S. with the elusive hopes of Myanmar and Malaysia. He described how the American system allowed even a dishwashing migrant child to rise to Secretary of Defense—yet in Malaysia, even Muslim migrants face police extortion, legal limbo, and a lack of rights. In Myanmar, the dream is even darker—where Muslims are barred from citizenship, vilified by both the military and democratic parties, and excluded from basic rights.
Maung Maung’s voice was once amplified by Al Jazeera; even U Wirathu mentioned him in a video interview. He remains a symbol of peaceful resistance and compassion.
This is the first of a series. May it inspire every migrant, mixed-race youth, and marginalized soul who has ever been told they don’t belong. The glass ceiling exists—but it can be shattered.
