Bangladesh Recalls Ambassador to Myanmar Amid Rising Diplomatic Tensions
Published: 29 May 2025
The Government of Bangladesh has officially recalled its Ambassador to Myanmar, Mr. Md Monowar Hossain, ordering him to return to Dhaka immediately, according to a report from Bangla News 24 citing confirmation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh on May 27.
Ambassador Hossain had been serving as Bangladesh’s envoy in Naypyidaw since 2023. His recall comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries.
According to Bangla News 24, the decision followed Myanmar’s objection to alleged communications between Bangladesh officials and the Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed organization operating in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Myanmar authorities reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction through a formal diplomatic note addressed to the Government of Bangladesh.
Sources familiar with diplomatic affairs suggest that the Myanmar military government, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and the State Administration Council (SAC), viewed these alleged interactions as a breach of diplomatic norms and responded with an official protest.
The controversy reportedly gained momentum after Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser, Major General (Retd.) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, publicly acknowledged that some level of communication had occurred between Bangladeshi representatives and the Arakan Army. This admission is said to have triggered the current row.
Additionally, Bangla News 24 reports that earlier this month, Bangladesh also recalled Major General F. T. Hossain, who was serving as a Defense Adviser at the Bangladesh Embassy in Yangon.
These developments highlight a sensitive moment in Bangladesh–Myanmar relations, particularly amid regional instability and ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s border states.

The Bangladesh government has ordered its ambassador to Myanmar, Md. Monowar Hossain, to return to Dhaka with immediate effect, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday.
Monowar Hossain, who assumed his post in Naypyidaw in August 2023, was directed to leave his position following rising diplomatic tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
According to diplomatic sources, the move follows a protest from Myanmar’s military junta over reports of alleged contact between Bangladeshi officials and the Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed group operating in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
The matter came to light after Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman publicly acknowledged such communication.
In response, Myanmar’s ruling State Administration Council, led by General Min Aung Hlaing, reportedly expressed its displeasure by sending a formal diplomatic note to Dhaka.
Earlier this month, Brigadier General Aftab Hossain, a defence advisor stationed at the Bangladesh embassy in Yangon, was also ordered to be withdrawn on an urgent basis.
