MMNN Health Alert: Emerging COVID-19 Variant NB.1.8.1 Detected in France as Cases Surge in Asia

A newly identified strain of the COVID-19 virus, known as NB.1.8.1, has been confirmed for the first time in France, amid a regional spike in cases across East Asia.

According to French health officials at the National Reference Centre in Lyon, four cases of the NB.1.8.1 variant were recently detected both in clinical settings and within the wider community. Virologist Bruno Lina confirmed the findings, noting that “a few cases have emerged, not many, but enough to warrant monitoring.”

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has reported additional cases in several European countries, including Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden, suggesting the variant’s gradual spread across the continent.

NB.1.8.1 is currently the dominant strain in China and has contributed to a rise in infections and hospital admissions in Hong Kong and Taiwan. While the variant is believed to be more transmissible — likely due to enhanced binding affinity to human cells — there is no current evidence to suggest it causes more severe illness.

Public health authorities have issued precautionary guidance, urging residents in affected areas to wear masks in crowded spaces and to stay up to date with vaccinations. Governments in several countries are also reportedly boosting their stocks of vaccines and treatment supplies in anticipation of further spread.

Early data suggests that although NB.1.8.1 spreads more easily than previous variants, it does not significantly evade immunity from vaccination or past infection.

As nations continue to monitor the evolving situation, health experts emphasize the importance of vigilance, transparency, and rapid response to mitigate any potential surges in cases.
